This shop offers a very pleasing mix of atmosphere and selection. The books are spread out over several rooms with each room holding its particular genres ( cook books occupy a room that was formerly a kitchen ). Staffed by the owners, the attention is on having the customer feel welcomed.
The owner is outwardly friendly, but. The trade policy is where this store earns most of my low rating. I took in about $60 retail value of *mint* condition, mostly hardcovers and a couple of (also mint) mass market paperbacks. She gave me $4 of trade credit. Maybe she expected me to haggle, IDK - in hindsight, her tone was kind of hesitant.
Customers can sit in comfortable chairs and read. The shelves are well organized and new books are constantly integrated. I have shopped at scores of bookstores throughout the world and Wilson's is at the top of my list in regards to enjoying my time shopping.
after reading Faithful by Alice Hoffman i had to have another .. the woman was so kind .. she was READING Alice Hoffman when i walked in and i was lucky enough Wilsons had ONE left .. PRACTICAL MAGIC which was the exact book i was seeking. great place for books .. warm and inviting.
For me, trade credit is important. Large selection, of some books in better condition (to add to my personal library) is also important. So I, personally, won't be back to this store.
In contrast, I went to a different used book store two days later with a similar amount of trade (Fewer hardcovers cause I'd unfortunately learned my lesson at Wilson's) And was given *literally triple* that. For LESS.
There is indeed a HUGE number of books! But, it's not as organized as one might like - You're literally wandering through stacks and around hidden corners trying to find stuff. AND a lot of the books they do have have obviously been traded for quite some time - They're really old and really beat up.
But for you - If you only care about trading books *from* Wilson's, using it like a lending library? YMMV, This could still be the place for you. It's got a cozy atmosphere and is open till 6pm on weekdays. (Which is why 2 stars instead of one.)
